Making our City Accessible

It has been a while since I wrote anything in my web blog due to commitments at home. We had our first child in January and things have been a whirlwind ever since.
When I receive a letter from a resident, who has a sister with a disability, I was really moved by it. Sometimes we forget that when we want to go swimming or to the mall, we can just go. This is an important issue and we need to look at making our community more accessible.

The sister of a woman confined to a wheelchair has made a pitch to Summerside City councillors to help improve transportation services for the disabled.Anne DesRoches' letter was read by Coun. Cory Thomas at this month's council meeting.Transportation is unavailable during the evening hours and weekends for DesRoches' sister, who has muscular dystrophy, said Thomas.Cab drivers are unable to take her because she requires support being transferred from her wheelchair to the car."A disabled person has no means of transportation for social activities which occur in the evening hours or on the weekends. I find this totally unacceptable," wrote DesRoches."She cannot take in a movie, play a game of cribbage or cards with friends or get any use from our beautiful new wellness centre."Donna's Transport is only available during the week.Thomas suggested creating a task force to address DesRoches' concerns."We have a beautiful Credit Union Place and some people can't get into it," said Thomas. The city should work with community groups and other bodies to find solutions, he said.
