The headline read “Vandalism Reported at Borden” in the
Guardian of Nov. 2nd, 1964. According to the newspaper, an RCMP
spokesperson reported that detachment had a busy Halloween night, as they
received many phone calls reporting windows broken and other vandalism. A
machine shed, destroyed by fire in Central Bedeque, was believed to have been
the work of “ Hallowe’en pranksters”. The shed was reported to contain several
pieces of equipment and was not insured. Damages were estimated to be at 4,000.
In Summerside, both the RCMP and town police reported that
Hallowe’en was one of the quietest in years with no great amount of damage
done. Police stated that fewer children than other years roamed the street on
their “trick or treat” tours and this was attributed to the cold weather that
Hallowe’en evening of 1964. Police also said most children were off the streets
by 9pm curfew. A public request had gone out earlier by Police Chief S.D.A
Wannamaker that residents stop giving out treats by 9pm.
