I, for one, do not share the same view as many municipal leaders in P.E.I. regarding the proposed assessment freeze by the new Liberal government. One of the biggest issues I heard canvassing Ward 8 twice during the November municipal election was voter unrest towards rising assessments. Many said if this continues, they may be forced to move outside the City limits.
I believe the equalization formula with the Province needs to be reviewed. With this intended assessment freeze, the City will need to start developing more partnerships with community groups, examine where our services overlap with other groups and cut accordingly. We need to start making our City and the Province more affordable for people to stay here. Local governments need to be accountable and examine our own operations first, before attacking the provincial government. That is my opinion.
